About us

We make the internet a little quieter

WebSilence is a website blocker and parental control for Google Chrome. It helps people focus on what they sat down to do, and helps parents keep their children's browsing safe, without watching what anyone reads.

What WebSilence does

WebSilence blocks the sites and words you choose, at the times you choose. It is one extension for two kinds of people: those who want fewer distractions at work or school, and parents who want the internet to be a safer place for their children.

More than 3,000 people use WebSilence, in 51 languages, from Ukraine to Vietnam, Brazil and the United States.

What we believe

Your browsing is yours

Every blocking decision is made on your own computer. WebSilence doesn't record the pages you visit and doesn't send them anywhere, not to us and not to anyone else. An account stores only your lists and settings, so they can follow you to another computer.

No ads, nothing to buy

The extension has no ads, no tracking and no payment. You can use it for three days without an account; after that, an email address and a password are all it asks for.

Block what harms, keep what helps

A filter that blocks Wikipedia because an article mentions a bad word is a filter people switch off. Age levels look at a page's address and title, and only count explicit adult terms in the page text when several appear together. We check every change against real pages, so news, encyclopedias and help pages stay open while adult sites stay closed.

Honest about the limits

No filter catches everything. WebSilence works in Chrome on computers; it doesn't run on phones or tablets, read messages or track location. We say so on the parental controls page rather than leave you to find out.

How WebSilence is made

WebSilence is built and maintained by a small independent team. New versions reach you through the Chrome Web Store, which reviews each one before it is published. The app itself is translated into 51 languages; this website starts in English, with more languages on the way.

Our server stores accounts and synced lists, and counts active installs anonymously. What it keeps, and why, is set out in the privacy policy.
