Terms
Terms of use
The rules for using WebSilence, written to be read. By installing the extension, creating an account or using this website, you agree to them.
1. What these terms cover
These terms cover the WebSilence browser extension, its optional account and sync service, the WebSilence Protection setup for Windows, and this website, websilence.app (together, “WebSilence”). “We” and “us” mean the team behind WebSilence. How we handle personal data is described in the privacy policy, which is part of these terms.
2. The service
WebSilence blocks websites and keywords in Google Chrome according to the lists, schedules, age levels and categories you set. The extension is provided free of charge. You can use it for three days without an account; after that, the popup and settings ask you to sign in, while blocking keeps working either way.
3. Your account
- Accounts are for adults. If you set WebSilence up for a child, the account should be yours, not the child's.
- Give an email address you can read: it is how you reset your password and a forgotten parental PIN.
- Keep your password and PIN to yourself. You are responsible for what is done with your account.
- You can stop using WebSilence at any time and ask us to delete your account (see the privacy policy).
4. Using WebSilence on other people's computers
Use WebSilence only on computers and browser profiles you own or are allowed to manage, such as your own computer or your child's. The Windows protection setup changes Chrome's administrator policies and needs administrator rights; run it only on a computer where you are entitled to make that change.
5. Acceptable use
Please don't:
- try to break into, overload or disrupt our server, or other users' accounts;
- create accounts automatically or in bulk, or use the service to send spam;
- use WebSilence to break the law or to watch or restrict someone without the right to do so.
We may suspend or close accounts that do these things.
6. What blocking can and can't do
WebSilence blocks what its lists, levels and categories describe, and new sites appear every day, so no filter catches everything. It works in Chrome on computers; other browsers, phones and tablets need their own settings. A determined person with administrator rights on a computer can remove any software. WebSilence helps you keep the rules you set; it doesn't replace talking with your children about what they do online.
7. Changes and availability
We improve WebSilence over time, which means features can change, be added or be removed. Updates are delivered through the Chrome Web Store. Our server may sometimes be unavailable for maintenance or because of a fault; blocking keeps working on your computer while it is, but signing in and syncing may not. We may stop offering WebSilence, and if we do we will say so on this website in advance where we can.
8. Ownership
The WebSilence name, logo, extension, setup and the content of this website belong to us. You may use them for their intended purpose, and quote short parts of our articles with a link back. Google Chrome and the Chrome Web Store are trademarks of Google LLC; other names mentioned on this site belong to their owners.
9. Other websites and advertising
This website links to other websites, and may show ads served by Google. We don't control those sites or ads and aren't responsible for their content; an ad or a link is not an endorsement.
10. No warranty
WebSilence is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, to the extent the law allows. We don't promise that it will block every unwanted page, that it will never block a page you need, or that it will run without interruption.
11. Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for loss of data, arising from your use of WebSilence or this website. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, or the rights you have as a consumer under the law of the country where you live.
12. Changes to these terms
When these terms change, we update the date at the top of this page. If you keep using WebSilence after a change, the new terms apply.
